Thank you for stopping by. I have always enjoyed writing and sharing knowledge about things that I’m passionate about. My goal with this site is to share my experiences in small business management, finance and my main recreational pastime, mountain bikes.
It’s kind of odd that I started this blog so late, as I was a relatively early adopter of social media. Thanks to Spence Smith and Randy Elrod, I started using twitter back in 2008 when it was still somewhat of a novelty. Since then, I’ve come to know so many great people through social media, many of whom I have never met in person. That’s an interesting door that social media opens for us.
I have had a fun and diverse career. My most recent full time gig was as President of Westone Laboratories. Throughout my career, I have had a serial pattern of joining small businesses in a financial executive capacity, then quickly transitioning into operations responsibilities. It’s a logical extension of being an effective CFO – you have to have one foot in operations in order to be a well-rounded finance executive.
I started my career with the Houston office of PwC (Price Waterhouse & Co. back in the day). After several years in the audit department of PwC, I joined several PwC alumni at a real estate development company that was developing First Colony, a large master planned community. I was CFO of this company until 1998, when we moved to Colorado for lifestyle reasons (that’s code for a smaller town and an outdoor lifestyle). For more detail on my business background, click the “My Background” tab at the top of this page.
I grew up in East Texas – deep behind the “pine curtain.” A little known fact is that I was an All State musician in high school, and I was a music major my first year of college. I have a degree in Accounting from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, and I’m still a CPA and CMA.
My wife and I have two adult children. In my spare time, I enjoy riding bicycles (mainly mountain biking and gravel paths) and spending time outside with Dillon, our black Labrador Retriever.
